Potassium levels in serum are mainly affected by acute and chronic renal failure, severe diarrhea and vomiting, some medication (e. g. ACE inhibitors, angiotensin receptor blockers, diuretics), disorders of acid balance and massive cell lysis or hemolysis after injury, surgery or burns.
