Cystatin C

Cystatin C is a marker for reduced glomerular filtration rate (GFR) especially for detection of moderate kidney function impairment. Cystatin C levels are independent from sex, muscle mass and age.

Preterm infants0.8 – 2.3 mg/L
Full-term infants0.7 – 1.5 mg/L
8 days – 16 years0.5 – 1.3 mg/L
Adults
20 - 50 years0.70 – 1.21 mg/L
> 50 years0.84 – 1.55 mg/L
Each laboratory should check if the reference ranges are transferable to its own patient population and determine own reference ranges if necessary. For diagnostic purposes, the results should always be assessed with the patient’s medical history, clinical examinations and other findings.

Cystatin C determination may be useful especially in children, elder people, in diabetics, patients with liver cirrhosis, in adult renal transplant recipients, in cancer patients and in pregnants suspected of preeclampsia.
