Introducing DiaSys Total bile acids 21 FS

Bile acids are amphipathic sterols synthesized from cholesterol in the liver and secreted into the intestine where they play an essential role in emulsifying dietary lipids. Determining circulatory levels of bile acids in serum are sensitive indicators of liver function in all species, reflecting hepatic synthesis, secretion, and re-absorptive functions. Although TBA (Total Bile Acids) levels provide early diagnosis of hepatobiliary deficiencies, they do not allow differentiating between various diseases. Increased serum TBA levels are associated with several diseases such as acute and chronic hepatitis, liver sclerosis, cirrhosis, and cancer. In addition, total bile acids are the most used biomarkers for intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy in clinical practice (ICP). ICP is a temporary condition caused by maternal liver dysfunction during pregnancy and characterized by intense generalized pruritus (itchiness) which usually begins in the third trimester.

Compared to conventional liver screening tests such as ALT or AST, which indicate acute liver damage, the determination of total bile acids allows early detection of liver dysfunction, early treatment and, therefore, prevention of severe, irreversible liver damage.

DiaSys’ Total bile acid 21 FS is an enzyme cycling based method that allows for signal amplification through cycled regeneration reactions. In the total bile acids test, serum bile acids molecules are repeatedly oxidized and reduced by the enzyme 3-a-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (3-a-HSD) with a concomitant accumulation of reduced co-enzyme thio-NADH that is detected at 405 nm.

Total bile acids 21 FS will be available starting September 2019 as dedicated respons®910 and system kit. A lyophilized calibrator, TruCal TBA, is also being introduced. Please refer to order information below.
