Increased in

  1. Gout
  2. Renal failure
  3. Ketoacidosis
  4. Lactate excess e.g. after ethanol ingestion
  5. Diuretic therapy
  6. Lesch-Nyhan syndrome
  7. Chronic lead nephropathy
  8. Polycystic kidneys
  9. Leukaemia, Lymphoma,polycythaemia
  10. Diet (high protein, high nucleoproteins)
  11. Drugs (uricostatic drugs, e.g. diuretics)

Decreased in

  1. Administration of uricosuric drugs (high doses of salicylates, probenecid, cortisone, allopurinol, coumarins)
  2. Renal tubular defects (Fanconi’s syndrome, Wilson’s disease)
